Leaves this page right away, and so does pressing Escape twice on a keyboard. It cannot erase your history, so if someone checks this device, use one they cannot reach.

Shelter for Family Safety covers Minnehaha, Lincoln, McCook, Turner and Union counties. If you are outside those, call them anyway and they will help you find the nearest shelter, or call 211.

What do you need?

If the phone you are holding is not safe

Do not change anything yet. Deleting an app, changing a password, or turning off location sharing tells the person that you know. That can make things more dangerous, and it can erase the evidence you would need for a protection order. What to do instead.

Use a device they have never had access to. A library computer or a friend's phone. Clearing your history is itself something a person can notice.

If your line is on their account, you can get it taken off. Your carrier has to separate it, let you keep your number, and keep the request confidential. You have to show them a document first. What counts.

Talk to an advocate before you touch anything. Solace, 1-877-462-7474, 24 hours, free. They do this specific thing all the time.

Buuut,

none of this makes a device safe. The Quick exit button at the top of this page leaves immediately, and it still cannot erase where you have been. If someone checks this phone, they can see it.

What to expect when you call

You do not have to give your name to Solace or to the shelter. Both are free. Nobody will make you file a police report, and nobody will make you leave your situation before you are ready.

Buuut,

911 and 988 work differently. Calling 911 brings police. 988 is a crisis counselor, and in a small number of calls where someone is in immediate danger they may involve emergency services. If that matters to you, Solace and the shelter are the ones that will not call anyone on your behalf.
