Somewhere To Be

Things that happen every week, sorted by day. If it happens once a month or once a season, it is on the calendar instead, where you can filter by what you are after.

We say what each one costs whenever we can. We also try to mention if it’s in a bar.

Most of what this town does for free happens on a weeknight. If you have suggestions, you know how to contact us.

Any day

  • Dragon’s Den Gaming. 7218 W 41st St. There is always free play and a wall of demo games anyone can pick up, any time they are open. The nights listed below are tournaments. Open Tuesday to Thursday 2 to 10pm, Friday 11am to midnight, Saturday 11am to 10pm, and Sunday noon to 9pm. Closed Mondays. They serve alcohol.
  • Good NAtured. 2501 W 10th St. 605-951-9330. The only alcohol-free venue on this page. Their recurring events do not charge at the door. Buying food or a drink helps keep the room open, and it is not a cover charge. Open Tuesday to Thursday 3 to 9pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to 9pm, and Sunday 11am to 6pm. Closed Mondays.
  • Siouxland Libraries book clubs. Nine of them, all free.

Buuut, you have to register, and six are full or waitlisted right now. Ask to go on a waitlist for any of them: 605-367-8700.

Monday

  • Vinyl night at Full Circle Book Co-op. 123 W 10th St, from 4pm. In a bar, and the night is built around drink specials: $2 off taps and $1 off wine.
  • Silent Book Club. Altered Species Ales in the Western Mall, between Scheels and the theatre. 6 to 8pm, once a month. Arrive at 6:00 and say what you are reading, read silently from 6:30 to 7:30, then stay and talk or go home. Bring your own book; there is no assigned reading. It is a taproom.

Buuut, the Monday moves. October’s was the 12th and September’s was the 14th, and their own event says it is not the first Monday. Check their Facebook group before you go.
  • Dragon’s Den is closed on Mondays.

Tuesday

  • Dragon’s Den Gaming. 7218 W 41st St. Chess, where people arrive between 5 and 6 and it runs until the store closes at 10pm. Smash Bros at 6:00. Magic Standard and Union Arena at 6:30.
  • The Writer’s Study at Full Circle Book Co-op. 123 W 10th St, 6pm. In their words, “Writers in the area, come one, come all!” In a bar.
  • Karaoke at Good NAtured. 6 to 9pm. “Everyone’s welcome, whether you’re a seasoned singer or a total newbie.” Alcohol-free.
  • Bingo at Big Lost Meadery. 2215 S Lorraine Place, 7pm. “Four rounds, no stress, good vibes. The first card’s free every round.” No cover, and you can bring your own food.

Buuut, their own pages disagree: the events page says 7pm and the location page says the venue closes at 8pm on Tuesdays. Call before you go.
  • Open mic and karaoke at Wiley’s. 330 N Main Ave, 8pm. Open to “any and all singers, musicians, comedians, poets, and rappers.” Karaoke takes over at 9pm, or earlier if nobody has signed up to perform. An 18+ bar, and it runs to 1am.

Wednesday

  • Dragon’s Den Gaming. 7218 W 41st St. Elestrals and Yu-Gi-Oh Advanced at 5:30. Magic Modern at 6:30.
  • Trivia at Big Lost Meadery. 2215 S Lorraine Place, 7pm. Four rounds, no cover.

Buuut, same as the bingo above: their events page and their location page disagree about whether they are open past 8pm. Call before you go.
  • Game night at Wiley’s. 330 N Main Ave, 9pm to close. Board games, card games, darts, and free pool all night. An 18+ bar.

Thursday

  • Dragon’s Den Gaming. 7218 W 41st St. One Piece at 6:30.
  • Trivia at Thunder Road. 201 N Kiwanis Ave, 6:30 to 8:30pm, in the Rev It Up Grille inside the park.
  • Community Game Night at Good NAtured. Fourth Thursday, 7 to 9pm. Alcohol-free.

Buuut, November’s fourth Thursday is Thanksgiving, and they have not said whether it moves. Check before you go.

  • Karaoke at Good NAtured. 6 to 9pm. Alcohol-free.

Saturday

  • Sioux Falls Spanish Club. 2pm at La Luna Café, 701 N Phillips Ave Ste 125. “A weekly meeting of aspiring Spanish speakers.”
  • Dragon’s Den Gaming. 7218 W 41st St. Yu-Gi-Oh at noon, One Piece at 5:30.
  • Skating at Jacobson Plaza. 810 N Phillips Ave, 11am to 10pm. $5 to get in and $3 for skates. The ribbon is refrigerated, so it runs whatever the weather. Winter only, and this season’s dates are not posted yet.
  • Free open gym at Fred Assam Elementary. 1 to 5pm. “This program is FREE. No registration, membership, or waiver is required.” Under 7 needs somebody 15 or older along; 7 and up can be dropped off.

Buuut, it is not every weekend. Last season it ran Sundays only in November and December, then Saturdays only from the first weekend of January through the end of April, and it was closed over the two weekends around New Year. The city has not posted this year’s dates, so the schedule above is last season’s. Call 605-367-8222 before you go.

Sunday

  • Skating at Jacobson Plaza. 810 N Phillips Ave, 11am to 8pm. $5 to get in and $3 for skates. Winter only, dates not posted yet.
  • Manifestation Practices at Good NAtured. 3 to 4pm, 2501 W 10th St. Alcohol-free.
  • Co-Creation Meditation at Good NAtured. Most Sundays, 4 to 6pm. Alcohol-free.
  • Shut Up and Write. 6:30 to 8pm at Scooter’s Coffee, 6503 W 41st St. Free. You turn up, everyone says hello briefly, you write silently for an hour, then you talk. “All writers and all experience levels are welcome.” Buying a drink is asked for, not required. The format does the social work for you, which makes this one of the easiest things on this page to walk into alone.
  • Open mic at Full Circle Book Co-op. 123 W 10th St, 7pm. “Come one, come all, and share your talents!” In a bar.
  • Dragon’s Den Gaming. 7218 W 41st St. Magic Casual Commander all day, Digimon at 5:30.
  • Free open gym at Fred Assam Elementary. 1 to 5pm, free, no registration. See the note under Saturday: the days change partway through the season and this year’s dates are not posted. Call 605-367-8222 first.
